Israeli universities have maintained their strong standing in the 2023 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) by Shanghai Ranking. Three institutions—Weizmann Institute of Science, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and Technion - Israel Institute of Technology —are ranked among the top 100 globally.

The Weizmann Institute leads the group at 69th place and Hebrew University ranks 81st. Technion - Israel Institute of Technology ranked 11th among global technological universities and 85th overall. The rankings, based on factors like Nobel and Fields Prize winners and high-quality research publications, reflect the institutions' academic excellence. The top five global universities are Harvard, Stanford, MIT, Cambridge, and Berkeley.

Despite challenges, Israeli academia remains globally competitive, with increased efforts to improve performance. Other Israeli universities, such as Tel Aviv University and Ben-Gurion University, are expected to rank among the top 500. The presence of three Israeli universities in the top 100 is seen as a significant achievement amid a difficult year for the sector.
