Article: "New Pipeline Brings Water From Mediterranean To Sea Of Galilee"

Israeli water company Mekorot and the Israel Water Authority recently completed a four-year, $250 million infrastructure project to flow water to the Sea of Galilee from five desalination plants in the south of the country. The project eases the national concern of lowering water levels in the country’s primary source of water, while reviving the previously dried out riverbed of Nahal Zalmon. With a network of underground pipelines, pumping stations, and local reservoirs, Mekorot now can “turn on the tap” to immediately flow water into the Kinneret whenever needed.

Since 2005, Israel has been desalinating water from the Mediterranean Sea to meet the country’s water needs. The recent development of desalination infrastructure allowed Kinneret to reverse the traditional flow of water through the country: while water previously flowed from the Kinneret south to the remainder of the country, the National Carrier Flow Reversal Project allows water to now flow north, replenishing the Kinneret instead of draining it. The project is the first of its kind in the Middle East.
